The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) is a national nonprofit dedicated to advancing the representation of Indigenous peoples from North America and the Pacific Islands in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education and careers. On Friday, October 3, 2025, I had the privilege of attending the AISES (Advancing Indigenous National Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I participated in the Career Expo alongside a friend and colleague, where we met so many talented and intelligent young people majoring in STEM fields, as well as professionals and educators dedicated to advancing Indigenous representation in STEM careers. It was an invaluable experience—one filled with meaningful conversations, new connections, and opportunities to share my professional expertise.
Although I only attended the Career Expo, my colleagues shared that the conference programs did an outstanding job of blending contemporary professional development workshops with Indigenous traditional teachings—a combination that is deeply needed in our communities. I was particularly inspired to hear that elders were included in discussions about how to co-exist and thrive in today’s modern world, while honoring and carrying forward our traditional knowledge.
During my stay in Minneapolis, I also had the pleasure of visiting Paisley Park, the legendary home and studio of Prince. It was an incredible experience to stand in the very rooms where some of his most famous songs were created and to see his guitars, awards, records, cars, and iconic stage outfits up close. The tour ends in a cozy lounge where guests can enjoy Prince’s favorite cheesecake, and of course, the gift shop—where I couldn’t resist buying a t-shirt. Visiting Paisley Park was a truly unforgettable experience and an absolute must-see for anyone visiting the Minneapolis area.

One of the highlights of the trip was dining at Manny’s Steakhouse, an upscale and well-known Minneapolis institution. From the moment you walk in, the restaurant exudes a classic steakhouse ambiance—rich wood tones, crisp white linens, and impeccable service. The menu featured premium cuts of beef and fresh seafood prepared to perfection. My meal was exceptional, and it’s easy to see why Manny’s has earned a reputation as one of the best steakhouses in the city.
Another favorite stop was 8th Street Grill, a lively downtown restaurant with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The food was so good that we stopped by twice during our trip! For lunch, I ordered the nachos, which were incredible—crispy, flavorful, and perfectly portioned. They also offered a wide selection of beers on tap and wines, making it an ideal spot to unwind after a full day of networking and exploring Minneapolis.
Overall, my time at the AISES National Conference and in Minneapolis was both professionally rewarding and personally memorable. I left feeling inspired by the people I met and the conversations I had. I’m already looking forward to attending the next AISES National Conference and continuing to learn, grow, and connect with others who share the same passion for advancing Indigenous excellence in STEM.
